Planetary Exporation Program

Tools Menu

The Tools menu contains several features to help you explore Mars.

Image Processing Controls

With the image processing controls you can easily manipulate a lot of NASA data. These controls are described in a separate section of the User's Manual.

Cross Section Controls

In PEP, drawing cross sections is easy. Just hold down the shift key and drag the most over the map. As you're dragging the mouse the elevation cross section is automatically drawn. Eventually, you may want to delete these cross sections. The "Delete Last Cross Section" deletes the last cross section drawn or moved. "Delete All Cross Sections" will delete all the cross sections from the map.

Display Arrows Panel

While exploring Mars you might want to map out a directional field. For example, by noting the direction of wind streaks you can gain insights into the global wind patterns. The Arrows Panel helps you do this.

To create an arrow, click on Add Arrow. Then, click and drag on the map. The arrow head on the will be at the end (not the start) of the line.

To delete the last arrow, just click on "Delete Last Arrow".

When you click on "Delete All Arrows", all the arrows on the map will disappear.

The arrows you create can be saved to a disk file. Just click on "Save Arrows To File". Then, when you want to load them back in, simply click on "Load Arrows From File".

Gazetteer Search

While exploring, you may want to go to a particular feature based on its name or type.
