Elevation Layer

PEP contains a global data set of elevation values for Mars. You can use this to create cross sections or images of elevation data.

Elevation Images

You can treat the elevation data as imagery, where changes in elevation are converted into changes in color. For example, here a false color elevation image. Lower areas are in red, higher ones in green and highest in blue.

The lowest features are ancient river beds and impact crater basins. The blue rings (high terrain) are crater rims.

By default, PEP applies a series image processing filters to the elevation data so it appears as yellow lines. If you would want to see a false color image like the one above, go to the Image Processing Panel, click on "Select" and pick "Elevation" from the menu. The Image Processing Panel now displays the filters that are applied to the Elevation layer. To delete the current filters, click on the "Delete" button for each filter. (The default processing actually takes four separate filters.) Then click on "New Filter" and select "False Color".
